That was the big theme for yesterday, Mom going on little outings with the Muffins, since Dad was home and available to babysit the remaining Muffins. First, Mom took Curtis with her to take Amanda to school, and then they stopped by a little bakery for a few cookies on the way home. Mom got one of the four "zebra" (striped) cookies out for Curtis, and then let him hold the bag. By the time he got home, Curtis didn't want anyone else to have the bag; he knew what those cookies were all about.
The outing with Jared came when Curtis and Lydia were napping and Amanda was still at school. We've been looking for a random electronic item, and Mom figured it might be worth checking the local drug store. They sell VHS tapes, so they could potentially sell anything! They didn't have the item, but they did have some yummy ice cream, as well as some bargain garden seeds. Jared picked out more carrot seeds (our little patch will REALLY need thinning now if anything grows), and Mom picked marigolds and tomatoes.
When Amanda got home, she had some sunflower sprouts she'd started at school, as well as a (very cheap) watch from "guessing box" (the closest thing her school does to show-and-tell). We managed to set the watch, but it stayed and stayed and stayed on the time we set it to, which was rather disappointing to Amanda, who dreams of watch ownership. However, with the new seeds and her seedlings to plant, it turned out to be a pretty decent afternoon, in between rain showers.
Amanda and Lydia got the final fun outing, a trip to a larger store after the boys had gone to bed in search of the same elusive electronic item. The store did actually have a few options to fill the bill, but more importantly for Amanda, they had a pretty pink reusable bag in the dollar section and some highly yummy cookies on clearance.
Then came today. And it was still rainy. Rain can get old anytime, but it's been especially hard for the Muffins now since they actually remember what sunshine is like, since we just had some last week (it gets easier in the winter when they forget that the backyard exists). Fortunately, our managers had a surprise for us: fix-it guys! First some people came to fix the leak by the chimney that's been wreaking havoc on all the bathroom walls in our building. Then, they sent the regular fix-it guys to fix the walls themselves. The kids had a lot of fun watching the workers, and Jared especially had fun telling the wall fixer about, well, everything as he worked. Mom was grateful for both the Muffin entertainment and the fixed wall.
In other news, our baby caterpillar was doing well when last we saw him this weekend. We're waiting until he shows himself again to change the leaves in his jar so that we don't accidentally throw him out, too. Things are not so good on the fish front: Amanda's new little goldfish Bi-spot (II) had to be flushed away Sunday evening. Coal is still alive, though, as are the plants in his tank. Maybe they just don't make fish nowadays like they did back in 2008.
Oh, yes, one more thing: there's a cactus growing in someone's yard within about half a mile of us. Not exactly native foliage for our area, but definitely fun to see.
